Markon's $100,000 pledge doubles down on CPS

Markon Cooperative Inc., Salinas, Calif., has pledged another $100,000 for research to the Center for Produce Safety and its latest fundraising campaign, bringing its contribution total to $200,000.
The amounts from Markon member companies — Ben E. Keith Foods, Gordon Food Service, Gordon Food Service Canada, Maines Paper & Food Service, Nicholas & Co., Reinhart Foodservice, and Shamrock Foods Co. — support the Center for Produce Safety’s goal to secure $20 million by the end of 2019.
Contributions fund industry-specific research aimed at reducing the risk of foodborne illness associated with fresh fruits and vegetables.
“Food safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Markon board chairman and Nicholas & Co. president Peter Mouskondis said in a news release. “Consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables is at an all-time high, but that means our responsibility must also grow. Now more than ever before, it’s critical that the industry becomes more prevention oriented by increasing efforts to provide actionable food safety research.”
Markon president Tim York served as CPS advisory board chairman from 2007 to 2011.
